MILITARY UNITS - GROUND FORCES

Units

Balkania introduces a number of interesting new equipment types which require special rules.

i. New Artillery units include self-propelled guns, rockets, battlefield missiles and anti-tank guns.

ii. A new-air defence weapon is introduced - the SA-6.

iii. Two new types of mechanised units are introduced, Armoured cars and non-amphibous APCs.

Self-propelled Artillery

Self-propelled artillery are artillery guns mounted on armoured chassis. This gives the artillery added mobility and protection. Movement Allowance is 10, movement type is armour.

Rocket Artillery

The Warpac armies favour the use of rocket artillery batteries to deliver massive amounts of firepower to a given area very quickly.

Rocket artillery is treated the same as other self-propelled artillery. It has a movement allowance of 10 and a movement type of armour. The only equipment of this type available is the BM-21 Rocket Launcher.

BM-21 3 hexes 8 AP

GM information only:

Firefactors; AC is A.

Indirect A B C D E

BM-21 5 3 2 2 1

Direct A B C D E

BM-21 1 0 0 0 0

Cost formula is; (sumFF(I)/DV)* Range +1 for self-propelled = 8.8

Battefield Missiles

There are two types of battlefield missile available from the equipment lists; FROG - 7 and SCUD - A.

Missiles differ from other weapons in that they have both a minimum and a maximum range, and that they do not always hit the hex they are aimed at.

MIS units have a movement allowance of 10 and a movement type of 'armour'.

Accur Range Diverge.

FROG 7 30% 3 to 6 1 or 2

SCUD A 30% 4 to 16 1

Accuracy is the chance of the missile striking the hex that it was targeted at. Range is the minimum and maximum number of hexes the missile may be fired. Divergence is the number of hexes away from the target hex that the missile will land if it fails to strike the target - that is a FROG 7 could land 1 or 2 hexes (in any direction) away from the target.

A missile hitting any hex (targeted or otherwise) will randomly attack one unit in that hex, friend or foe. Missiles are fired using the HARrassment order (17) and attack every phase.

GM information only:

These missiles have the following indirect fire factors;

A B C D E

FROG 7 5 5 5 4 3

SCUD A 6 6 6 5 4

MIS units have an armour class of A.

The cost formula is

(2*(SumFF(I)/DV) + (Max range - Min range))* Accuracy.

FROG 7 16 AP

SCUD A 26 AP

Anti-tank Guns

The soviet influenced armies are the last in the world to continue to deploy large numbers of anti-tank guns. These units move as artillery with a movement allowance of 6. They have no indirect fire capability and can engage targets in their own hex only. Anti-tank guns are reasonably good against Armoured vehicles but are poor against infantry units.

Area Defence Air Defense Weapons

The SA-6 is a self-propelled missile system. It moves as armour with a movement allowance of 10. It has the ability to attack hostile aircraft in it's own hex and in the 6 hexes immedietely adjacent.

GM Information Only:

Armour Class is B.

Fire Factors are :

(Note that item 61 Rapier in El Mythico is also an area defence weapon, although movement allowance is 6 and movement type is artillery.)

Armoured Cars and APCs

An armoured car is treated exactly the same as an APC except that it cannot transport troops. Armoured cars available in Balkania are the FUG-70 and BRDM2. Both are amphibious.

Sauer 4K4 Armoured Personnel Carrier differs from a normal APC in that it is not amphibious.

EQUIPMENT

This module uses the standard rules for equipment purchases and delivery. Suppliers are the individual countries which border Balkania, each of which is able to supply only certain types of equipment.

Purchasing

Equipment can be obtained in 3 ways, it can be included in a player's start-up, it can be captured at a depot or it can be purchased from a neighbouring country. The countries who share borders with Balkania are - Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Slovakia and the Ukraine.

Each country can supply certain types of equipment as detailed in the following list.

Entry Points

Balkania uses NON - STANDARD entry point rules as detailed below.

Balkanian units may not move outside the country. International borders may not be crossed.

NOTE: This is now modified to cause attrition losses rather than forbidden.

Equipment can only be delivered inside Balkania.

Category A (light) equipment can be delivered to any Balkanian hex which is adjacent to an international border, except across impassable mountain hexsides.

The shores of Lake Antonic and Lake Balaton meet the international border requirement for the delivery of light equipment. Only Italian equipment may be delivered via these two lakes.

Category B (heavy) equipment can be delivered to any clear Balkanian hex adjacent to an international border, providing this hex is adjacent to at least one non-mountainous cross-border(ie international) hex and a major river does not separate the hex from the international boundary. An intact bridge negates the river prohibition.

Source country restictions as outlined above apply. Standard rules for the delivery of naval and air equipment apply.

In addition equipment can be delivered by sea from various suppliers as follows;

Italy, Albania and Greece can deliver equipment to coastlines bordering sea areas 1, 2 & 3 (the Gulf of Istria & the Adriatic Sea).

Bulgaria and the Ukraine can deliver equipment to coastlines bordering sea areas 4, 5 & 6 (the Black Sea).

DEPOTS

The old regime created various stockpiles of antiquated equipment and ammunition throughout the country. These depots are located on the map. They are guarded.

EX-GOVERNMENT FORCES

Some vestiges of the old regime remain to guard the arms depots, installations and some transport links.

GM Notes

Armoured vehicles will have to be rated for speed - Fast Normal Slow, this will determine their movement points - 8,9,10 etc.
